We kick off the show with some light banter about Star Trek, along with some rumors of the upcoming sequel by J. J. Abrams.

We look at some interesting news from Australia, where it seems the Victorian Police used civilian vehicles as a “human shield array”. Bizarre tale, to say the least. Dominating the mainstream news and discussions on the web this week has been the debates surrounding Same-Sex Marriage – we review the politics from the week on the issue, and uncover the reality of the situation.

Later, we look at the mammoth opening for The Avengers, and look at the rumors surrounding DC‘s possible upcoming plans to establish a Justice League film franchise after Marvel had such major success this week. As always, we close out the show with our WTF stories of the week and the Countdown to the Gutsfuck of Humanity. All this and more on this week’s edition of Social Blend!

Originally Broadcast: September 08, 1966

Several weeks ago, I reviewed the first couple of seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation for our Netflix Review feature here at Geeks Of Doom.

Commencing in 1966, Gene Roddenberry's creation would eventually become a franchise revered and followed by millions of fans worldwide. Despite this, the history of the original series would become affected by budgetary constraints and poor ratings in archaic scales, limiting the primary voyages of the USS Enterprise to three seasons only.

As is prevalently known, Star Trek follows the voyages of the Enterprise, on its peaceful mission of exploration into unknown areas of the galaxy – attempting to meet and contact new civilizations, and represent the interests of the Federation. Lead by Captain Kirk (William Shatner), and accompanied by First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) among many others, the team aboard the starship would become known in-universe as legendary historical figures trailblazing their way into the unknown – and create such an element of veneration associated with the ship that the name Enterprise would be assigned to the Federation's future flag ships [...]

Does that make me seem too overexcited for this review?

Well then, go to buggery if it does, because my, oh, my, Star Wars Omnibus: A Long Time Ago, Volume 5 is an extraordinary trip down memory lane for those of us Star Wars fans old enough to remember the closing era of the Marvel Star Wars.

The fifth part of the A Long Time Ago Omnibus reprints the final series of issues originally released by Marvel Comics – from Issue #86 August 1984 to Issue #107 September 1986. The collection represents the closing period of Marvel's Star Wars publication, in a post Return Of The Jedi era as the Expanded Universe (as it was during that time) would begin to wane. It would not be until 5 years later when Timothy Zahn would release Heir To The Empire, his first episode of The Thrawn Trilogy, that enthusiasm would return to the Expanded Universe with a new level of enthusiasm from fans old and new [...]

For our special bicentennial edition, we’re joined by special guest Brian Bickerton aka Tau_Zero. Our main focus of Social Blend 200 is a look back on the podcast – where and when and why it started, as we reflect on and discuss some of the highlights and accomplishments we’ve made since 2012.

While we do review many of the big events and stories we covered, and how we evolved from focusing on Social Media, we also reveal some of the behind-the-scenes info and tales as of yet unheard – as well as bringing forward some current opinions on previous issues that had been raised during difficult moments.

Aside from the look back on the podcast from 2008 to today, we also discuss the current state of social news in the form of Reddit and Digg. We look at the recent news of Obama endorsing gay marriage; and the newest outrage caused by the TSA involving a young diabetic teen who had her insulin pump ruined by the body scanners.

During the show, as part of our celebration, we play the full versions of our previous and current theme songs: "Dreamonic" by Corey Hodgetts; "Weight Of The World" by Gold Tooth; and "Not Ready For Love" by Emerald City. We also reveal where our WTF stories of the week came from and how it all started. All this and more on this week’s edition of Social Blend!

The twelfth episode of The Geeks Of Doom Round Up is here, and Greg takes a look at the underplayed third trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Marc Webb. For our music selection this week, Andy pays tribute to Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys who sadly passed away this week, with "Fight For Your Right To Party".

Unexplained mysteries, no matter how radical or bizarre, have always been, to some extent, an obsessive interest of mine. Things like Roswell 1947 or The Zodiac Killer have fascinated me – both with the factual evidence available, and the speculative theories offered from both believers and questioners alike. Both examples cited have had their share of fictional representation in media, but the mystery of D. B. Cooper has yet to have a central role in stories… until now.

While some fans may protest that the television series Prison Break had the Cooper mystery involved, it was not the central focus of the story. When Netflix added nearly all of the Classic Albums series to their streaming collection last week, it was inevitable that I would draw attention to the series in this review. Favorably rated as one of the most memorable and cornerstone albums in Metal history, Iron Maiden: The Number Of The Beast now seems, in retrospect, the appropriate selection for this review. The band is frequently cited as one of the fundamental acts that bolstered the genre of metal, having blasted onto the scene among the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal – and they continue onwards to this day, renewing their legacy with new releases that strengthen their music identity [...]

There have been countless additions to the stories in the Expanded Star Wars Universe over the last couple of decades, and Dark Horse has long touted some of the finest comic stories of the galaxy far, far away. However, very few come along that have the power and potential of being so good that it could be conceivable to imagine a film or television version of the tale. The compendium represented in The Other Sons Of Tatooine is one of these rare pleasures, showcasing some of the exceptional storytelling focusing on Star Wars.

The conception behind The Other Sons Of Tatooine is simple: to focus on the characters from Tatooine other than Luke Skywalker who have had major impacts on the in-universe history of the saga. The first, an obvious selection to adapt, is Biggs Darklighter, first performed by Garrick Hagon in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The second, a creation within the Expanded Universe, is Janek Sunber aka Tank – who does not appear in A New Hope, but is mentioned by Mark Hamill in the scene where the Lars Farm purchases the droids [...]

We kick off the show looking at the recent developments and fallout from the Roadrunner Records downsizing, and examine a good piece about the issue over at MetalSucks.net. We then highlight today’s big story of a college student who was taken into custody & abandoned in a holding cell for 5 days without food or water.

Later, we report on the TSA‘s continual infuriating conduct, in which they engaged in an “enhanced patdown” of a 4 year old girl. We also continue our coverage of CISPA, as the bill passes the House and moves to the Senate. In tech related news, Australia has issued a parliamentary inquiry into why downloads and software cost so much more down under than elsewhere.

In entertainment, we come back to our discussions on The Avengers, which opens this week – and Prometheus, which opens in June. Before we close out, we talk a little Game Of Thrones, and also examine the news that Digg is looking into being acquired by the Washington Post or CNN. As always, we close out the show with our WTF stories of the week. All this and more on this week’s edition of Social Blend!

Coupled with some extraordinary cinematography and an exceptional score, The First Grader is a film based on true events that is not to be missed.

The explosive and amplified conclusion to the Crimson Empire epic is finally here, reaching an ending that makes for a highly satisfying resolution to the series that began many years ago. Star Wars fans who have followed the adventures of Kir Kanos will thoroughly enjoy the last two issues of Empire Lost, a tale that also sets up what chronologically comes next for the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant.

Issues 5 & 6 conclusively tie together the loose ends left from the earlier installments, as Kir Kanos and Mirith Sinn journey to meet Imperial representative Feena D'asta, in an early effort to bring peace between the two major factions. They discover themselves betrayed, as antagonist Ennix Devian begins unleashing his strategy to open up his aim to retake the Empire under his own iron fist and perverted new order. Kanos and Sinn find themselves placed in a standpoint where they must stop Devian's forces, to help any future chance at peace between the Republic and the Empire [...]

We examine social media and technology from the perspective of culture and society, and beyond – as we look at a growing view of our age from a slightly different angle.

In tech news, we explore the recent developments on the CISPA front, as the bill progresses towards the voting stage, while the White House publicly vows to veto the bill. On a related note, we look at the claim that 20th Century Copyright Law is analogous to 1920′s Prohibition; while Australian ISP iiNet wins a landmark legal case down under.

On the entertainment news front, we discuss recent viral-designed promotions for the upcoming Prometheus movie, and briefly talk about The Avengers. As always, we close out the show with our WTF stories of the week. All this and more on this week’s edition of Social Blend!

The eleventh episode of The Geeks Of Doom Round Up is here, and Andy pays tribute to Levon Helm from The Band who passed away this week, as we review a clip from the movie, The Last Waltz. For our music selection this week, it's a week of tribute to the fallen, as we pay tribute to Dick Clark and his dedication to rock and roll through the years, with a clip of him introducing KISS playing "Rock And Roll All Night."

Finally, we also pay tribute to Greg Ham from Men At Work who also died this week as we close our show with the song "Who Can It Be Now?" [...]

We kick off the show debating the merits of time travel, timelines, and alternate universes in the lore of Star Trek, but then pay our respects and tributes to the late Dick Clark, who sadly passed away on the day of this recording.

We follow up on our CISPA coverage this week, with a look into the interesting Calyx Institute Project, a push to create a new ISP with user privacy as its highest priority, being driven by crowdfunding. Megaupload is back in the news this week, as we discuss the posturing by the US Government in trying to restrict the legal defense.

We also take a glimpse at recent Anonymous tales, including one were a killer posted his actions on 4chan, and later had his house burned down by authorities to end his standoff. Later, we bid another farewell to the Space Shuttle program and discuss the fascinating photos of it buzzing the city on the way to its new location. We close out the show with our WTF stories of the week, and the Countdown to the Gutsfuck of Humanity. All this and more on this week’s edition of Social Blend!
